Without getting into the fact that idolatry has consequences or without getting into the fact that God has ordained the way in which He is to be approached I would like you to read it. Without discussing what happened in the Old Testament when man turned to idols or when Jesus said to the Samaritan woman, "you do not know what you worship" I would recommend the article. Remaining compassionate and sincere I say, It saddens PRESBYTERIAN THOUGHTS to know that not all love the Word of God or the Lord Jesus although through works righteousness some attempt to approach Him.

A Breach of the Second Commandment

Without discussing what happened in the Old Testament when man turned to idols or when Jesus said to the Samaritan woman, "you do not know what you worship" I would recommend the article. Is the presence of a cross considered a breach of the 2nd commandment? Most every Reformed church sanctuary I've been to (RCA, CRC, PRC) contains a cross, I did a quick check and saw that HNRC doesn't, and I'm not sure about 1st NRC. As far as the article says, the cross wasn't a crucifix.

This cross was used in a ceremony that reveres the image of the cross. The ceremony is called the Day of the Holy Cross where people people adore and give gifts unto THE CROSS!
Plus, Any object or image or thing that is used to aid in worship, reverence, or adoration is an image.
In the NT church there are two images that God has ordained to aid us in worship and love for the Son- the water of baptism and the wine and bread of the Lord's supper!
I think this is appropriate to remember:
Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13:4,5)

I too agree with Andrew. I attempted to be very cautious and not pretend to be able to see into the secret will of God, but only to use this as a medium where the second commandment could be discussed with the consequences thereof mentioned.
It is very sad that this has occured and I do not pretend to KNOW exactly why this event took place. It is just one of those evenets that even the world can say 'wow'. People use lightning as the universal judgment of God upon sinners.
A METAL cross on top of a mountain!!! That sounds like a LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR!
I know all about the adoration of the cross. In the ceremony as practiced by Anglocatholics the 'priest' says 'behold the cross', and all the people say 'come, let us adore it.' Except for John Kensit, who stood up and declared that it was idolatry.
It is. But these idolaters were also apparently not very bright.
