The Ethics of Food

I am taking an Ethics class. We have been talking about axiology which is the study of values. Our professor gave this illustration for making value judgments in all that we do (whether conscientiously or un-conscientiously) in the area of food:

"When we eat at McDonald's, do not pray, bless this food to our bodies; pray protect us from what we are about to do." -Dr. James Grier

Whew!
I'm glad I'm not in that class... I love my McDonald's fries :)

I don't get it, what's wrong with McDonald's?

That was good for a chuckle alright! Dr. Grier (not Greer) is quite the teacher! He travels America like a 25 year old and lectures with energy that belies his 77 years of age. Pray that God would keep him around for a good while longer. We need good men like him!

That's awesome. Whenever I eat fast food, I'm never sure whether asking for a blessing on the food might fall under tempting God or trusting that He can bless even junk food. Not that I worry too much about eating it - it's generally pretty decent.

Hmmmmmmmm.....Dr. Grier has opened a huge, and I do mean huge, can of worms with that statement. However, I do find statements like that to be more annoying than helpful or even funny.

Sven,
I think that we should all participate in a church split over those that are for transfat and those that are against it. :)
Why are these comments unhelpful?

Steve and Janna,
Please do a food review of the Madison/28th McDonalds. I would like you to answer your own question!

I could go for some McFatty fries right now...

I don't believe I've ever been to that McDonald's. I generally avoid McDonald's as I prefer adult fast food in the form of Wendy's. That said, McDonald's does have excellent fries and their recent Chicken Biscuit addition here up north is quite good. It has a surprising kick for a McDonald's product.

Nate -
the pastor of a friend of ours once told her that a person knows he/she believes in a God of miracles when that person can sit in front of a greasy lasagna at a church potluck and ask God to "bless it to our bodies."

"study of values"
Taco Bell vs. McDonalds
T.B. tends to be way cheaper.
McDonalds tends to give one a case of the scoots...

There's so many other things that are a hundred times more healthy than Mc D's...

Transfats being the latest rage in nutritional obsession, yet still no one addresses the neurosis these thought patterns cause.

Sven, do a post on folly manifested in eating...

So what would Grier say about Starbucks, Nate?

Sven, worms are healthy to eat. A diet of worms...
